As well as using precision agronomy tools to facilitate sustainable management decisions, our remote sensing monitoring capabilities allow users to monitor, verify and report on-farm MRV practices and outcomes. Remote sensing offers a scalable and reliable approach to detecting key metrics including regenerative agriculture principles such as no-till, cover crops and crop rotations.

Cover crop detection

One of the most important sustainable agriculture management practices, cover crops improve soil structure, reduce erosion and runoff risk and sequester carbon into the soil. Hummingbird can detect cover crops from satellite by analysing vegetation indices during the non-growing season, enabling stakeholders in the agrifood chain or water resource management to monitor and verify the prevalence of cover crops over large areas.

Tillage detection

Minimising soil disturbance and retaining crop residue on the soil surface is another vital component of regenerative agriculture, improving soil structure and mitigating carbon emissions. Hummingbird can classify different types of tillage practice such as no-till, min-till and conventional tillage by analysing the percentage of reflectance at key wavelength bands in the near-infrared and shortwave-infrared spectral zones.

Crop rotation detection

Applying our crop type classification models to analyse geospatial and temporal trends in crop types enables us to identify crop rotations and diversity. This allows users to monitor these management practices at large scale, as a component of sustainable agriculture verification or supply chain vision.
